Orion Management LLC (Orion) is a valued, cross-functional technical security integrator to the government, military and commercial sectors. Established in 2001, Orion has successfully delivered technical security solutions to clients across the federal, state and commercial markets, including: the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of Commerce, U.S. Department of Justice (ATF), the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), as well as multiple other transit authorities and commercial entities.

As a veteran-owned small business (VOSB), Orion is dedicated to delivering robust safety and security solutions to clients around the world. The Orion team has expanded to over 120 credentialed employees who specialize in fire, life safety and capacity building to enable the rule of law.

Timothy Britell founded Orion Management in 2001. With decades of international experience in technical security, including 10 years with the army reserves and a degree in aeronautical science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Orion was born with its initial contract with the U.S. Embassy in Madrid, Spain.

Tim was joined by his brother, Andrew Britell, in 2002. With a strong combination of military and civilian experience in high-threat, classified operations, the brothers’ collective expertise enabled Orion to provide leading security services to clients across the globe. In 2003, Christopher Morin joined Orion to lead business development in the U.S. federal, state and local government markets. Chris’s expertise in training, technical security design for the Department of State brought Orion’s capabilities full-circle.

Today, Tim, Andrew and Chris are responsible for all facets of the business and have developed a strong executive team comprised of Jason Tibbetts, operations director; Amir Eftekhari, strategy and business development director; James Cole, finance director; as well as Jim Ensor, human resources director.

“Tim started the company out of his basement,” Amir elaborates. “The partners have come a long way and with their success with federal clients and WMATA, Orion populates a full floor of an office building and an office in Merritt Island, Fla. Despite our success, the partners treat us as family. We’re a group of idealists; inventors. Forever tinkering with products and processes, we’re always on the lookout for better solutions for our clients. Working at Orion requires integrity and dedication; it’s a company that rewards original thinking and hard work. None of us here at Orion would have it any other way.”

Global Neighborhood Watch

Orion began as a turnkey technical security company and has grown into a global provider of technical security systems, fire life safety systems, inside and outside plant cabling, professional security training and advisory services. The U.S. Department of State (DOS) is one of the business’ important clients; Orion has outfitted 110 embassies across the globe with high-tech security systems.

“One of our core areas of technical security is fire alarm and life safety systems,” explains Amir. “Orion started on the U.S. Embassy in Madrid, Spain, working for the DOS. Building on their success in Spain, Orion assembled a core group of exceptionally hard-working, motivated professionals, enabling us to be a recognized as a premier provider of integrated life safety and security solutions that ensure the security and safety of our clients. Keeping in line with that growth, our growth strategy is to take on new avenues of fire and life safety technologies and become the preferred vendor on the East Coast.”

In addition, Amir goes on to explain that the team has expansive experience installing a number of high-end intrusion detection systems. “One of our key differentiators is our relationship with Pixel Velocity, a company specializing in near field situational awareness using specialized closed circuit television technology,” he continues. “Pixel Velocity has leveraged decades of experience in the defense industry to create the world’s first end-to-end video surveillance system specifically optimized to provide high-definition, synchronized multi-camera video and highly reliable, automated wide-area threat detection over large, complex sites. The beauty of this technology is the data is managed at the edge thus requiring less of a burden on existing IT infrastructure than other video/CCTV solutions, as well as the geospatial image and advanced analytics.”

With a strategic partnership with Pixel Velocity, Orion can now leverage its core capabilities and offer an exceptional technological solution for clients, which include: hotels, airports, marine ports, critical infrastructure sites, sports stadiums and other large, complex public gathering places.

A Safer Ride

Orion offers tremendous services, including unique CCTV technology to work in the transportation industry. “In addition to working in miles and miles of tunnels underground for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, D.C., we also install and maintain cameras and video recording equipment on buses,” Amir explains. “There are cameras installed on WMATA’s fleet of 1,500 – 2,000 buses in the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area. The special mobile CCTV systems is used to enhance rider security through continuous monitoring, assisting with improving Metrobus safety by recording incidents and assisting operators to develop safer, more efficient driving habits. If there is an incident on a bus, it is all recorded and on file. The mobile cameras systems we install pick up a lot of the footage people see on the local news, which is wirelessly uploaded to DVRs as soon as bus drivers pull into their hubs at the end of their shifts.”

Amir goes on to note that Orion’s integration technology also allows the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan police to have access to the camera footage wirelessly from police vehicles in close proximity to a bus. “If alerted to an incident, they can see what is happening and respond appropriately and quickly,” he details.

Building on these successes, Orion has also responded to a recent request for information from the Department of Transportation regarding school bus safety. “There has been a lot of jurisdiction to place cameras on the stop bars of school buses,” Amir elaborates. “They are eager to talk to us and we believe we can leverage this opportunity into new markets.”

Orion also employs master and journeyman electricians to design, build, install and maintain electrical systems, treating each unique customer site with diligence and care. “Our electricians have worked alongside esteemed client personnel, as well as our own security and fire alarm technicians, checking and verifying the quality of the work conducted in the field,” he continues. “What makes Orion different is that our electricians are cleared to work in secure and sensitive areas, and are thoroughly trained on the appropriate protocols. “

Due to Orion’s excellent services to many government agencies and commercial entities that require the highest levels of trust and confidence in the company’s abilities, Orion has become an industry-leader for highly sought after clients.

“We work with clients like WMATA to include perimeter security upgrades at bus garages, CCTV enhancements for metro stations, low voltage electrical work and the installation of new technical security systems for a WMATA bus maintenance facility,” he says. “We have been fortunate to turn success into follow-up work for clients. Over the years, Orion has become quite a dependable, technical fire alarm and mass notification system services for the commercial, health care, government and education industries, including high-profile customers.”

Additionally, Orion has strategic partnerships with Edwards Systems Technologies and Hochiki to provide fire alarm and mass notification solutions both nationally and internationally. Through hard work and success, Orion was recently selected as a sole awardee for the WMATA Fire Contract. Under this contract, Orion will overhaul all of WMATA’s ancillary buildings, bus and rail maintenance facilities and rail yard fire alarm systems; this enables Orion to be a fire safety leader in the transit industry.

Better Prepared Security Professionals

The business offers rule of law advisory services across the globe, as Orion has become a leading provider of security and life safety services. Clients can take advantage of capacity building services, as well as security and safety training programs. Working diligently in both austere and wartime situations abroad, and for projects benefiting the public within the U.S., Orion has delivered highly specialized technical training in fields ranging from border security to VIP protection.

“Our training within the U.S. Department of State, the Department of Defense and transportation authorities illustrate our capabilities across security specialties and law enforcement,” Amir says. “We just won a year and a half project in Belize, providing forensic and ballistics advisory. We are working with the Department of State to enable the National police and National Forensics’ Lab to properly handle ballistic forensic information and help the international community lead the effort to fight against weapon trafficking in Latin America. This is a newer portfolio of services for us and with this contract, we also want to make sure we deliver support solutions for critical security and diplomacy.”

Orion is well-positioned to help fight the war of both human and weapon trafficking. “Working with stakeholders, such as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearm and Explosives and our friends at International Narcotics & Law Enforcement with the Department of State, we are on track,” he says.

Orion has established key relationships with vendors in order to maintain an unbroken supply chain and offer value-added services to clients. In the coming years, the company’s five-year strategic plan includes possible merger and acquisition opportunities, although Amir notes the focus of the company remains on growing our customer base and investing in scalable growth. The business is making new connections with agencies and organizations that will allow better exposure and opportunities. As the company moves through its second decade of operation, the ever-changing Orion Management LLC will continue to improve and expand the services and technology it has become known for, while maintaining dedication to the principles of quality service and innovation.
