Proficio is an award-winning managed security service provider (MSSP) offering 24/7 security monitoring and advanced data breach prevention services to medium- and large-sized enterprises across a number of industries. As cybersecurity becomes an increasingly larger concern for corporate entities, institutions and governments, Proficio is on the forefront of developing proprietary security solutions that help these entities protect against a myriad of threats.

Heading up legal and compliance at Proficio is Adron Beene Jr. With a background in business and strong family ties to Silicon Valley, Adron brings a wealth of experience to his role as general counsel and compliance officer at Proficio.

“Cyber attackers are becoming increasingly sophisticated and it takes powerful, flexible tools like security information and event management (SIEM) tools to identify and stop attacks,” says Adron “While SIEMs do have some out-of-the-box value, if you don’t have the resources to properly configure and monitor it, you will be overwhelmed with alerts and miss the threats buried in the noise. By partnering with Proficio, organizations are able to get a team of security experts reviewing and monitoring their network’s security data 24/7.”

Founded in 2010, Proficio has seen rapid growth due to the heightened awareness of cybersecurity threats in combination with a rise in in the popularity of cloud-based services and an increasing acceptance of the Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model. Proficio’s ProSOC services are a perfect fit for many companies that lack internal resources but need to secure their networks. The company’s full slate of services includes 24/7 security monitoring backed by skilled analysts and advanced SIEM correlation; compliance solutions for PCI, HIPAA, SOX, GLBA, FFIEC, NERC CIP and FISMA regulations; and full management of security devices including patching, penetration testing, health and performance monitoring, tuning, vulnerability scanning and remediation.

“Trust is critical in the cybersecurity industry, it’s something we have to continue to earn every day,” says Adron. “It’s my job to make sure we earn the trust our customers place in us. I do this by ensuring adherence to our contractual obligations, keeping on top of constantly developing security compliance requirements and building the policies our company follows to keep both ourselves and our customers secure.”

Bringing Some Silicon Valley to Carlsbad

After graduating with a degree in business, Adron moved to San Diego where he entered a management training program at General Dynamics. “While I enjoyed working in management roles, I always had a strong desire to go into law. I grew up in my dad’s Silicon Valley law office and I can’t say enough about how important he has been in shaping my career,” he says. Spurred by this lifelong interest, Adron earned his JD from the University of San Diego in 2013.

Adron began his career at Proficio with a six-month stint as a security operations center (SOC) analyst and content developer before being promoted to director of technology compliance and in 2014, general counsel. By starting his career in the SOC, he has firsthand knowledge of operations and the challenges customers face on a daily basis.

As a company focused on cybersecurity, risk management is one of Adron’s primary concerns in his role as general counsel. To that end, he recently became “Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control” (CRISC), the leading GRC certification provided by ISACA.

“I try to seamlessly integrate the risk management process in the daily operations of the company,” says Adron. “When building the processes and controls of [Proficio], I insert risk indicators into the steps. Formal risk identification exercises are great tools — and I use those too — but as a cybersecurity company we are constantly at risk, so I have to be continually vigilant.”

Establishing strong partnerships

Another important aspect of Adron’s role is securing trademarks and patents for the company’s proprietary security services. Proficio turns to a trusted network of legal partners, including Del Mar, California-based MU Patents, for this process. As a firm geared toward entrepreneurs and small- to mid-size businesses, Adron partners with MU Patents to protect Proficio’s intellectual property. “They have a very structured approach and they’re very cost effective; they make it easy to understand where your money is going,” he says.

In a typical day at Proficio, Adron meets with the company’s executives and managers, reviews contracts and assists the sales team in bringing in new customers. He considers himself to have a “gatekeeper role” between sales and operations. “I work with our operations team and across the whole organization to ensure we can follow through on what we promise [on a customer agreement],” he says.

On the risk management and compliance side, Adron performs internal audits, coordinates with external auditors and ends the day by checking in with the managing director of the company’s Singapore-based SOC.

“The most rewarding part about working at Proficio is building something that absolutely needs to exist. Organizations large and small need effective cybersecurity, but they should not have to become experts themselves in order to get it,” says Adron. “I have the privilege to help guide a team that provides real, effective cybersecurity, and I’m proud of the service we provide.”

At home in the fast-paced world of technology, Adron will continue to provide expert legal advice to Proficio as it becomes a leading name in cybersecurity.
